ELLERY TRUSTNewport · Anno 1889
The Ellery Trust Company · Founded 1889

Time is the only asset.
Everything else is weather.

For one hundred and thirty-seven years, the families of Ellery Trust have sailed through panics, wars, and booms with the same instrument: patient capital, held in trust, measured in generations.

Newport harbor, first light

A fortune is a clock wound by one generation to strike for another.

— Josiah Ellery, founder's ledger, 1889

The instrument

A family is a small solar system.

Everything orbits the center. Our four disciplines are the rings that keep each generation's motion steady — none touching, none colliding, all held by the same quiet gravity.

IFiduciary custodyThe innermost ring — trusteeship, administration, and the safekeeping of what must not be lost.
IIThe investment officePatient allocation across a century's horizon. We have held some positions longer than most firms have existed.
IIIEstate & successionThe transfer of the whole — capital, property, and understanding — from ring to ring without disturbance.
IVPhilanthropy & recordThe outermost orbit: the family's name, its giving, and its written history, kept in good order.
The workshop

Kept like an instrument.

Nothing left to drift

Every trust reviewed on its anniversary; every portfolio reconciled to the penny; every governing document read again, annually, by a partner. Maintenance is the whole craft.

The long instrument

We plan in twenty-five-year arcs — the length of a generation, not a market cycle. Decisions are tested against one question: how will this read in 2051?

Built into the stone

Ellery Trust has never been sold, merged, or renamed. The charter of 1889 still governs; the partners still own the firm entire. Continuity is not a slogan here — it is the product.

One stated fee

A single annual fee, set out in writing, covering all counsel. No commissions, no products, no percentage surprises. Plain dealing has kept families here for five generations.

Engagement

How a family joins the register.

I.The introduction

A private conversation in Newport or at your home — unhurried, without documents, and without obligation on either side.

II.The examination

With your leave, we read everything: trusts, titles, holdings, and history. You receive our written opinion of the whole — candid, and yours to keep.

III.The keeping

If we agree to proceed, stewardship begins — and, if the past century is a guide, does not end.

By appointment

The register holds twenty-eight families.
It has room for thirty.

Families of substantial and settled means — typically $25 million and above — are received for introduction throughout the year.
